Best Reflective Roof Coating
These days everyone is looking to save energy costs. In the summer months, some
homeowners find it near impossible to keep their homes comfortable because of the intense heat combined with the
ridiculous cost of electricity. There are things you can do to help reduce these costs and a properly applied
reflective roof coating is one of these things.
Reflective roof coatings are products applied to roofs to reduce solar heat,
especially in areas with hot, sunny weather for a good part of the year. Reflective roof coatings act like mirrors,
reflecting the sun's radiant energy back into space. Reflective roof coatings provide the functional and
environmental benefits that the public now demands.
Installation is relatively easy things should be done by do-it-yourself homeowners or you can hire professional.
Typically for larger jobs the roof coatings are applied with air pressure sprayer, and smaller jobs the roof
coatings are applied similar to paint with a roller or a mop. The consistency of the roof coating is much thicker
than paint and has significantly more value to energy savings. Reflective roof coating can
cut cooling costs from 10 to 70 percent depending on the coating used, climate, and the degree of sunlight to which
the roof is exposed.
Reflective roof coatings are not for every application however. Reflective roof
coatings are not recommended for areas that are cool or cold for much of the year and/or experience high cloud
coverage. Roofing materials also contract and expand daily as they heat up during the day and cool down at
night.
For tax purposes, roof coatings are counted as a maintenance item and can be written off 100% in the same year.
The advantage of roof coatings are
significant and if you want to try to save money on your utility costs you would be wise to use this method for
reducing those costs. There are some environmentalists who advocate the entire country using reflective roof
coatings on our homes. That may be a bit extreme but the idea is actually okay.
Everyone must do what they can to save energy costs as consumption far outweighs supply on a year-to-year basis. A
more important factor is consumption of your resources, i.e. your money, is something to consider. We spoke with
her family that lives in a three-bedroom apartment in Florida and their electric bill was an excess of $500 per
month, to keep their apartment at 82° during the summer months.
